What are Pressure Sensitive Labels?

PRESSURE-SENSITIVE LABEL INFORMATION

Pressure-sensitive labels (PSL) make up the largest portion of labels in use. Essentially, pressure-sensitive labels are like advanced stickers. They are the most common type of label and are applied by way of a pressure-activated adhesive. This type of label can be printed on a variety of materials and can accommodate a long list of design attributes like foils, embossing, specialty inks, and more. Comprising most of the labeling market, we’ll take a look at pressure-sensitive labels, their attributes, benefits, and features, and answer some of the most-asked PSL questions.

HOW ARE PRESSURE SENSITIVE LABELS MADE?

Pressure sensitive labels are printed using a variety of techniques. They can span flexographic printing, digital printing, and thermal printing. In the most basic terms, PSLs combine a substrate, or label material, adhesive, and ink to create the artwork that adorns the products you see everyday.

HOW DO YOU APPLY A PRESSURE SENSITIVE LABEL?

To answer this question, we need only look to the name: Pressure-Sensitive Labels. PSLs use adhesives that are activated by pressure. Simply pressing down on the top of the label will activate the adhesive to adhere the label to the surface in question. Depending upon the size, application specifications, and the type of adhesive, there are different ways to apply PSLs. Some applications may require equipment and some can be done by hand.

WHAT IS A PSL USED FOR?

PSL applications span an incredibly wide range of industries. Besides the usual product branding and informational uses, a PSL can also come in handy for manufacturing, safety information, and more. Check out the slideshow above to see some of pressure-sensitive labeling’s many uses.
